(REAL NAME)    Rezension bezieht sich auf: Oliver!-2009 London Cast (Audio CD) "Oliver!" is one of those shows whose score is better when listening to it than when not. It is certainly not among my shortlist of amazing musical theater scores but once all the songs are granted access to your ear, you cannot but concede that there are many gems. "Food Glorious Food" provides setting, introduces several characters and is as catchy as any opening number can hope to be. I do not usually like children on stage but this is one of the most effective numbers written for that sort of actors. "Where is Love?" is another very pretty number, which is not too effective on this recording, however, as Laurence Jeffcoate does not seem to find a character in Oliver; he sounds very much like a choir boy. "Consider yourself" shall serve as just one example of Lionel Bart's wonderful lyrics - it takes a certain amount of linguistic brilliance to come up with "Nobody tries to be lah-di-dah or uppity--There a cup-o'-tea for all." Not only is that a highly original rhyme, it also sounds exactly appropriate for the characters who sing it. Musically, however, the highlight is "Who will Buy?" with its small blocks that intertwine just to make room for a rousing number.

And then there are the two main stars of the recording. On the one hand, there is Jodie Prenger, who got the part of Nancy by winning a TV casting show. She sounds a little under duress in "It's a Fine Life" (which has strange meters) but provides goosebumps with the panic and hysteria she puts into her voice in the song's reprise. She also sings "As Long as he Needs me" very well without making hers a necessary version. Her voice does sound somewhat hoarse occasionally, a condition she shares with several cast members, among them Ross McCormack as Artful Dodger and Wendy Ferguson as Widow Corney.

On stage, Rowan Atkinson was the total focus of attention, practically the show's raison d'être. And even though, he is more comedian than singer, his command of the stage comes across on the recording as well. Every song he is given is in good hands - possibly especially because he cannot rely on just singing them. He turns them into masterpieces.

Most ingredients here mix well, the ones that do not are not disturbing enough to put the overall enjoyment of this recording into question. Thus, this is a CD to have.
